NEW IRISH LEADER OUSTS OPPONENTS
Parliament confirmed Albert Reynolds as prime minister on Tuesday, and he swiftly purged his Cabinet of ministers closely identified with his predecessor, Charles Haughey.Reynolds dismissed eight of the 15 Cabinet members, naming David Andrews to replace Gerry Collins as foreign affairs minister and Padraig Flynn to replace Ray Burke as justice minister.
Collins and Burke were deeply involved in Irish policy toward Britain and Northern Ireland.
Members of the Dail, the lower house of parliament, voted 84 to 78 to approve President Mary Robinson's nomination of Reynolds.
