NationsBank seeks shelf offering OKNationsBank Corp., a Charlotte, N.C.-banking company with operations in Roanoke, is seeking regulators' clearance to sell $1 billion in debt securities and preferred stock, according to documents filed Tuesday.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Charlotte-based NationsBank sought approval for a shelf offering that amounts to permission to sell corporate IOUs - like notes or bonds - and stock from time to time.
Shelf offerings give corporations flexibility to take advantage of market conditions. A company can register its securities in advance and keep them "on the shelf" for up to two years before selling.
The filing said NationsBank has no specific plans for further acquisitions. - Associated Press \
Brokerages create lobbying group in Va.
RICHMOND - Fifteen brokerage firms doing business in Virginia have organized a lobbying group and a political action committee to make their views known to state legislators and regulators.
In the past, the companies have expressed their concerns individually. But that proved "expensive and tremendously time-consuming," said Frederick E. Kienel, senior vice president of Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. and manager of the firm's Richmond office.
Kienel is president of the new Virginia Securities Industry Association. He said the group is the first of its kind in the country. Its 15 charter members include Merrill Lynch and Scott & Stringfellow. - Associated Press
