WYTHEVILLE MULLS ANIMAL REGULATIONS

Town officials are looking at the possibility of designating properties where residents have a large number of dogs or cats as "hobby kennels" to ensure the regulation of the animals.

The most common complaint involving animals stems from large numbers kept at particular properties, Town Councilman D.B. Cox said in a report from the Public Works Committee.

The committee has been reviewing ordinances from other localities regulating animals, he told council Monday night. It has not ruled out the possibility of requiring tags for cats as well as dogs, but Cox said there were complications in requiring tags for both.

"Some communities have adopted regulations stating that the number of animals kept beyond a specified level constitutes a hobby kennel. Under their provisions, hobby kennels can be licensed and regulated," he said.

Councilman John Jones said the problem is mainly animals not being cared for and causing such problems as getting into trash. The committee will continue to study the situation.
