FANTASY CONVENTION APRIL 10-12 IN BLACKSBURG
Plans are under way for Technicon 9, Blacksburg's ninth annual science fiction, fantasy and games convention scheduled for April 10-12 at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Center for Continuing Education.Tom Deitz, author of books including "Windmaster's Bane," "The Gryphon King" and "Soulsmith," will be the author guest of honor.
Mark E. Rogers, the artist guest of honor, has credentials as both a writer and artist. He is both author and illustrator for the "Samurai Cat" series and author of "The Dead" and "Zorachus."
The convention also boasts a fan guest of honor: Colby Perkins, who has developed a new science fiction game show for Technicon.
Titled "The Acme Sci-Fi Net Mystery Quiz," it is a combination of such TV and computer games as "Jeopardy," "Remote Control" and "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" and tests the sci-fi trivia knowledge of participants.
Other games, including role-playing games, will be held in an expanded gaming area this year.
There also will be a costume competition, with awards given for exceptional creativity, skill or presentation.
Other activities will include a post-costume competition dance, variety show, art show and auction, amateur film festival, around-the-clock video rooms, panel discussions and a dealers' room.
General registration is $21 in advance and $23 at the door and, for students, $18 in advance and $20 at the door. A one-day registration is $13 for everyone.
