ROANOKE FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN CALIF.

A Roanoke fugitive who apparently won scholarships to San Diego State University while on the run was arrested without incident on campus, police said Tuesday.

Frank Daniel Spieth Jr., 30, was arrested Monday after FBI agents received an anonymous tip, said Joseph C. Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI's San Diego office.

Spieth was convicted in Roanoke in 1988 of obtaining property by false pretense, Johnson said.

The FBI said Spieth violated his parole when he left Virginia in 1990. He also is accused of obtaining a car from a Roanoke dealership by using a fictitious name and Social Security number.

Once in California, the FBI said, Spieth assumed the alias of Logan Scott William Keilly. He registered for spring admission as a biology student focusing on premedicine at San Diego State University said Michael Car, a school spokesman. Spieth started classes last month.

Spieth's university scholarships for this semester amounted to approximately $2,750 for tuition, room and board, said George Cole, another school spokesman.
