NEW MARKET CANCELS RE-ENACTMENT
The town and the Chamber of Commerce have canceled this year's re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of New Market.Officials said there wasn't enough time to plan for the May event.
"We just flat ran out of time," said Barton Long III, chairman of the committee that coordinates the event.
"We were late getting started and rather than have a shoddy re-enactment, we'll start planning for next year and try to have a good one."
The May 15, 1864, battle sent 6,000 Union soldiers against 4,500 Confederates. It is best remembered for a charge by VMI cadets that turned the tide of the battle and gave the South a victory. Ten cadets died and 48 were wounded in the fighting. - Associated Press
