METRO WRESTLERS GO TO THE TOURNAMENT MAT
This will be the busiest weekend of the season for Roanoke Metro wrestlers. All 12 teams will compete in regional or district meets.Northside, which won the Blue Ridge last week, will send its entire team of 13 to Rustburg for the Region 3 tourney. Coach Fred Wagner had four district champions - freshman Clifford Dunford (103) and three juniors - Robin Keeling (104), Bryan Van Ravestine (160), and Steve Ray (189).
Lord Botetourt had six Blue Ridge champions - freshman Jamie Bednarek (112), unbeaten junior Dan Sell (125), sophomore Bobby Stewart (130), senior Cary Bednarek (145), senior Bryan Anderson (151), and sophomore Charlie Orange (171) but will send 12 to Rustburg.
Salem had 12 regional qualifiers, lead by unbeaten senior Luqman Wade (119). William Byrd had 10 to qualify, lead by district champions senior Derek Linderman (135) and heavyweight junior Kyle Hamman.
Staunton River, which placed second, had two AA winners in the Seminole District tourney and will send 12 - including winners are junior Todd Huddleston (103), and senior heavyweight David Anthony - to Rustburg.
Coach Otis Timberlake's James River team won the Group A Pioneer District and had two winners in unbeaten junior Tony Bocanegra (103) and junior John Miller (130).
Glenvar had two district winners in state champions junior Jason Porter and unbeaten Brandon Semones (171). The Highlanders had 12 to qualify for the regionals.
