SALEM SALESMAN JOINS RACE AS INDEPENDENT

Rodney P. Furr announced this week that he will run as an independent candidate in the May 5 Salem City Council election.

"I think the voters need to have somebody to choose from besides those who traditionally run," said Furr, who has lived in Salem since 1956.

"Council has run, for the most part, unopposed for several terms. Although I don't disagree with anything they've done, the voters are entitled to have a choice."

Furr, 44, said this is his first stab at politics. He has served on the Curriculum Planning Committee for the Salem school system and is chairman of the administrative board of First United Methodist Church in Salem.

Furr, a business management graduate of Virginia Tech, works in sales for Process Specialities Inc. in Salem.

He and his wife, Dianne, have a son, Jeffrey, and daughter, Cydney.

Furr is the fourth person to enter the City Council race. Incumbent Mayor James Taliaferro and councilmen Howard Packett and Alex Brown announced last week that they would seek re-election.
