SALEM TO CONDEMN MOWLES ROAD PROPERTY
Salem City Council authorized city staff Monday to condemn property needed to close a portion of the city landfill.Council adopted an emergency ordinance authorizing the filing of a condemnation suit to acquire 10.10 acres on Mowles Road in Roanoke County.
About 95 percent of the property will be used to control drainage and water runoff for the closed section of the landfill, City Manager Randy Smith said. The rest will be used for drainage for a new section of the landfill, he said.
The property is one of three parcels the city needed for closure, Smith said. The property owner had refused to sell her land to the city.
The right of eminent domain allows for localities to condemn private property for public use.
