WINTER SPECIAL OLYMPICS EVENTS SCHEDULED SATURDAY AT VIRGINIA TECH
The 1992 Special Olympics Winter Sports Invitational will be held Saturday in the War Memorial gymnasium at Virginia Tech. Athletes from around western Virginia will participate in the games with more than 115 players representing 18 teams expected to compete in a basketball tournament.
The event will feature traditional opening ceremonies, including a parade of athletes, the Special Olympics oath and the lighting of the Special Olympics flame.
Volunteers are needed to help form "home-team crowds" to cheer for the Special Olympics teams. Volunteer registration is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:15 a.m., and basketball competition begins at 10:45 a.m. Closing ceremonies and acceptance of awards will be held at 3:30 p.m.
