LEGISLATORS HONOR TAYLOR

Roanoke Mayor Noel Taylor, who is retiring in June after more than 16 years as mayor, was recognized by the House of Delegates Thursday for his years of service and leadership to the city.

Taylor, a Republican, was given a standing ovation by the delegates as he stood on the House floor with his wife, B.J., and was hailed by Del. Clifton Woodrum, a Democrat, as "a consensus builder and conciliator."

"He spearheaded efforts at downtown revitalization, fair housing, economic development and affirmative action. . . .," Woodrum said. "In the words of Saint Paul, he has epitomized the saying, `How good, how pleasant it is for brethern to dwell together in unity.' He has served by example. He is our pastor, our teacher, our leader, our friend.' "

A resolution sponsored by Woodrum and passed by the House commends Taylor for his service and example. - Staff reports
