TALK SHOWS FOCUS ON CIVIL RIGHTS TO MARK BLACK HISTORY MONTH

NEWS PROGRAMS: Celebrate Black History Month over the airwaves.

WVRU's "Talk of the Town," which is broadcast Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m., has "The Dream: Has It Become A Reality?" Assistant Radford University English professor Opal Moore will discuss the civil rights movement and where we stand today.

"Speakers Corner" airs on WVRU Monday at 1 p.m. with anchorman Roger Mudd. This week's guest is civil rights leader Julian Bond, who discusses the threats to civil rights in the '90s. He believes there will be tougher challenges to Affirmative Action programs in this decade.

WJJJ airs Paul Harvey twice today: 8:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. with quips on events and people as well as news and commentary.

\ INTERNATIONAL: "Lakutshon Ilanga: Music Is a Healer" features South African music Tuesday at 8 p.m. This sixth part of the 13-part series is entitled "The Heritage of Tradition."

WVRU's "International Folk Music Hour" airs today, 2-3 p.m.

WUVT plays "New Music" weekdays noon-9 p.m., and airs an "International Fest" today, 5-9 p.m., with reggae, ska, blues, dance music and more.

\ SPECIALS: Old-time fiddle player Floyd Hubert Edwards will be featured in a WFNR tribute Thursday, 8-9 p.m. Edwards' sons will narrate the program, which will also include never-before-released music.

WVVV's got info on how to register for the "Be A Guitar Hero" contest. Win backstage passes and tickets to the upcoming Van Halen concert and a $600 guitar autographed by the band members. Listen for details.

WFNR will have a benefit gospel sing next Saturday at Auburn High School to help DJ Dandy Don's family through a recent loss. Local merchants are urged to donate items for an auction the same night. Call 382-6106 for information.

WUVT is a sponsor of the Feb. 24 Knitting Factory touring concert that features three bands. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Squires Student Center. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for non-students.

WVRU is airing a new 12-part series on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. called "Thinking About Drinking." The half-hour documentaries explore America's No. 1 substance abuse problem. This third segment is entitled, "The Lady Drinks," which discusses the cruel double standard applied to women alcoholics.

\ LIVE BASKETBALL: Tulane is at Virginia Tech today starting today at 12:30 p.m. It can be heard over WVVV, WKEX, WJJJ, WRAD and WRIQ. Those stations will also carry Tech at VCU on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.

In local high school sports, WRAD and WRIQ will have Friday's Radford and Christiansburg game; WKEX carries the Blacksburg and Carroll County game; and WBLB has Pulaski coverage, all beginning at 7:30 p.m.

\ ROCK: WVRU's "Long Live Rock" Monday at 9 p.m. has the first installment of a new feature on Aerosmith.

On WVVV this week: "The King Biscuit Flour Hour," Sunday at 10 p.m., has Crosby, Stills & Nash; "Metal Shop" airs Wednesday at 11 p.m.; U2's "Achtung Baby" is featured on this week's "Album Feature" Sunday at 11 p.m.; "In the Studio," Sunday at 9 p.m., has the Allman Brothers' "Eat A Peach;" and Friday's "Five at Five" has Van Halen.

\ COUNTRY: WKEX has a special salute to 35 years of country music today, 9:30 a.m.-noon, which covers the top tunes from 1950 to 1985. The "Nashville Record Review" airs today at 3:30 p.m.

WFNR has "Grand Old Country" tonight, 8-10, with golden country oldies.

WPSK airs "Star Trax" Sunday at 10 p.m. and "American Country Countdown," with the Top 40 of the week, airs Sunday at 4 p.m.

WRAD airs "The Ralph Emery Show" weekdays at 10:30 a.m. This week's featured artist is Mark Chestnut.

WRIQ has the "Top 30 Country Countdown" with Jim Casey on Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

\ GOSPEL/CHRISTIAN: WKEX simulcasts "Focus on the Family," weekdays at 9:05 a.m. This week's programming is: "Serving The Lord in Business" Monday; "Laughter In the Walls" Tuesday and Wednesday; and " Battered Families: Help & Hope" Thursday and Friday.

\ CHILDREN: WUVT's "Hickory Dickory Dock" show is broadcast Saturday mornings, 9-11, with call-ins, children's poems, songs and discussions.

WKEX's "The Children's Bible Hour" is heard at 9:05 a.m. today and 11:05 a.m. on Sunday.

\ JAZZ: WUVT has it Sunday through Friday, 9 a.m.- noon. The station also carries 20th-century classical music, Sunday through Friday, 6-9 a.m.

WKEX has "Wax Works," 1-2 p.m. weekdays, with big band, jazz, swing and ballad greats.

WVRU's "Mellow Tones," which features fusion, mainstream and New Age jazz, airs Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon.

WVVV plays "True Blues" Sunday at 8 p.m. with music from the legends and the newcomers.

\ COMEDY: WVVV's "Comedy Hour" runs today, 10-11 a.m.

WVRU's "Hub City Spoke Repair" airs Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.
