DAY LIGHTS IT UP IN RADFORD WIN

The difference between the first half and second half for Radford University's basketball team Saturday was like night and day.

Doug Day, that is.

The junior from Blacksburg was held to three points in the first half as Radford trailed by seven points, but his 19 second-half points sparked the Highlanders to a come-from-behind 72-63 Big South Conference victory over Davidson.

"Doug Day's a great streak shooter and when he gets hot, the guys find him. They got him the ball and he banged them," said coach Ron Bradley, whose conference-leading Highlanders (16-7 overall, 9-1 Big South) continued the most impressive hot streak in their Division I history by winning their fifth in a row and for the 11th time in 12 games.

In the process, Day's 22 set the school career points record of 1,348 in only his third year. Ron Shelburne, the former Pulaski County star, finished with 1,332 points in his four-year career.

Davidson (7-14, 2-7) led 35-28 at the half and opened its margin to 41-28 in the first 2:55 of the second half. That's when Day break came.

The shooting guard nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 23-9 run over the next 6:05 that put Radford ahead by one point.

In a span of four minutes, he was 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point line to cut Radford's deficit to 46-44. Davidson still led 50-46 with 12:10 remaining when Day hit another trey, then a 2-pointer to put the Highlanders up 51-50.

Davidson regained the lead briefly, but Brian Schmall put Radford ahead for good, 54-52, with a 3-pointer of his own with 9:35 to go.

Davidson stayed close, trailing 61-59 with 2:05 to play, but Schmall's second 3-pointer of the game put some distance between the teams. Radford's biggest lead was the final margin. \
