FERRUM HISTORIAN FRANK HURT DIES
Frank Benjamin Hurt, a professor emeritus at Ferrum College and Western Maryland College, died Sunday.Hurt, born in 1899 in Ferrum, received his bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University and earned master's degrees from the University of Virginia and Princeton. He did doctoral work at Johns Hopkins University.
After 35 years of teaching political science at Western Maryland, where he also served as tennis coach, Hurt came to Ferrum in 1965 as head of the division of social science.
After his retirement from Ferrum in 1970, Hurt was commissioned by the college's board of trustees to write a history of the college. He wrote several papers dealing with the history of the Blue Ridge and its people.
A funeral service will be held in Vaughn Chapel on the Ferrum campus at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
