TURNER GETS ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

Senior center Russell Turner of Hampden-Sydney has been named to the GTE Academic All-Region III squad for outstanding achievement in the classroom.

Turner, from Roanoke, will appear on the ballot for the national squad, which will be announced in March.

This is the second straight year Turner has been named to the regional team, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A double major in English and economics, Turner has a 3.561 grade-point average. He spent six weeks last summer studying at Oxford University in England after receiving the prestigious English Speaking Union Scholarship.

On the court, Turner is a force for the Tigers, who are 18-5 this season. He averages 23 points and 9.6 rebounds per game to lead the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and is the all-time leading scorer in Hampden-Sydney basketball history. - Staff report
