ROBERTSON, HODGE POWER NO. 1 LAUREL PARK

Laurel Park, the top-ranked Group AA boys' basketball team in the state, overpowered Fieldale-Collinsville 80-57 Tuesday night in Piedmont District play.

The Cavaliers stayed close early and trailed 51-42 after three quarters, but the Lancers converted 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth to pull away.

Forward Lonzy Robertson, who finished with 23 points, was 4-of-5 at the free-throw line in the final quarter. Odell Hodge, who added 18 points, was 3-of-3. For the game, Laurel Park (18-2 overall, 17-0 Piedmont) made 21 of 26 free-throw attempts.

Ron Wilson added 16 points and Chauncey Strange 11 for the Lancers.

Keith Hodge led Fieldale-Collinsville (11-8, 9-8) with 16 points. Lemuel Jones had 12 and Mario Walker 11. \

Magna Vista 117

Tunstall 99

RIDGEWAY - After playing a close first quarter, Magna Vista scored 41 points in the second and 42 in the fourth to defeat Tunstall in a Piedmont District shootout.

The Warriors (14-5, 12-5) clinched third place in the district with the victory. Marcus Toney scored 28 points and Brian Taylor 34, season-highs for both players.

Tunstall staged a comeback in the second half. The Trojans scored 35 points in the third quarter and made six 3-pointers in the fourth. Tunstall had closed the gap to 75-66, but the Trojans got a technical early in the fourth quarter and the momentum swung back to Magna Vista. \

Martinsville 57

Patrick County 37

MARTINSVILLE - All 15 of Martinsville's players got to play in its Piedmont District victory over Patrick County. The Bulldogs took a 26-16 halftime lead and never were challenged.

Martinsville's Jason O'Dell scored eight of his 15 points in the first half to extend the Bulldogs' halftime lead.

Martinsville (17-2, 15-2) has wrapped up second place with one game remaining. \

Bassett 66

Chatham 58

BASSETT - Dytanyon Norman scored 26 points and the Bengals forced 20 turnovers to take a Piedmont District victory.

With Bassett (10-9, 9-8) leading by five after three quarters, Norman scored 10 in the fourth as the Bengals held off the Cavaliers (4-15, 4-13).

Bassett made 17 of 20 free-throw attempts. Art Wade scored 16 for the Bengals and Stacey Valentine added 14.

Dave Motley led Chatham with 14 points.\ Galax 55

Shawsville 42

SHAWSVILLE - The Maroon Tide scored 10 straight points in a two-minute span in the third quarter to put away the Shawnees in a Mountain Empire District tussle.

Shawsville dropped to 3-16, 1-16 in the district, despite a 29-point, 17-rebound effort by 6-foot-2 center Kenny Dow.

The Maroon Tide (12-7, 12-5) got 18 points from Jeff Spells. \

Lexington 61

LEXINGTON - Ramon Sampson had 21 points to power Covington to a Pioneer District win.

Tony Jeter, Neal Dressler and Keeno Jones each chipped in 10 for the Cougars (16-3, 16-1).

Gavin Clark led Lexington (11-8, 9-8) with 21 points. Martin Mayerchek and Jesse Baker each finished with 11. \

James River 65

Highland 49

MONTEREY - James River pulled away in the third quarter for a Pioneer District victory.

The Knights led 26-24 at halftime but outscored Highland 18-8 in the third quarter. Joey Steger scored 18 points, Troy Thompson 14 and Chad Caldwell 11 for James River (13-6, 13-4).

Chris Schill finished with 12, Chris Harvey 11 and Micah Ginn 10 for the Rams (3-16, 3-15). \

Chilhowie 74

Abingdon 64

CHILHOWIE - Tyrone Brown scored 33 points, but that wasn't enough to offset four double-figure scorers for Chilhowie, which pulled off a non-district victory.

Patrick Brooks led the Warriors (8-10) with 21 points, while Sydney Barr scored 19, Jason Fore 13 and Eric Sheets 12.

The Warriors led 32-26 at halftime and gradually pulled away from Abingdon (1-17). \

Northside 70

Alleghany 53

Walt Derey scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half as the Vikings prepared for Friday's first-place showdown at Lord Botetourt with a Blue Ridge District victory over the Mountaineers.

Getting strong inside play from Derey, who also had 16 rebounds, and using strong pressure defense that forced 24 turnovers, Northside (15-3, 7-0) raced to a 36-24 halftime lead.

Northside's victory clinched at a tie for the Blue Ridge regular-season title. The Vikings can win the title outright by beating Lord Botetourt on Friday. A Cavaliers' victory would force a one-game playoff before the Blue Ridge District Tournament.

Matt Hill added 17 points for Northside, and Jimmy Porter scored 12. Michael Hunter paced Alleghany (10-10, 2-6) with 12 points, and Todd Wheatley scored 10. \

Carroll County 63

Tazewell 45

TAZEWELL - Carroll County broke open a close game in the second half and defeated the Bulldogs in a non-district game.

Carroll led 31-29 at the half, but the Cavaliers' defense and rebounding turned it around in the third quarter.

Ben Sumner and Jason Stockner each had 14 points for Carroll (13-7), and Kris Richardson added 12.

Chris Webb had a game-high 17 for Tazewell (9-7). \

Hargrave 58

North Cross 57

The Raiders' shooting went cold in the fourth quarter and the Tigers clawed back to pull out a Virginia Independent Conference victory.

North Cross, overcoming a 19-17 first-quarter deficit, led 35-27 at halftime and led 53-47 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Raiders scored only four free throws, and Hargrave rallied with 11 points for the victory.

Reuben Pickard led all scorers with 17 points for Hargrave (9-9, 8-6), and Dewayne Swinton had 12.

Marcus Cardwell had 15 for North Cross (11-12, 8-5), and Aaron Marley added 11. \

Covington Boys' Home 78

Roanoke Valley Christian 65

COVINGTON - Donnie Costigan made 15 of 16 free throws and poured in 37 points to lift Covington Boys' Home to a win over the Eagles.

Covington led 47-46 after three quarters, but drilled the Eagles 31-19 in the final quarter. Paul Moore scored 13 of his 24 points in the fourth for Boys' Home (16-2).

Jaon Delong had five 3-pointers and 23 points for Roanoke Valley Christian (8-12). Sam Donnelly added 13 and Aaron Slocomb 11. \

Gateway Christian 78

Stanleytown Baptist 42

BASSETT - A 27-7 run in the second quarter helped carry the Crusaders to an easy victory.

Sam Moore scored 14 points and David Arthur added 14 with eight rebounds and four blocks for Gateway Christian (16-5). Brad Ewing finished with 13 points.

Wes Craig led Stanleytown Baptist (8-8) with 21 points. \

Lynchburg Christian 60

Carlisle 47

LYNCHBURG - The Bulldogs outscored Carlisle 12-1 at the free-throw line and pulled away for a Virginia Independent Conference victory.

Gabe Lyons finished with 20 points and Jamie Elder added 18 for Lynchburg Christian (14-5, 10-3), which fell behind 15-7 in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs battled back to tie at 24 by halftime, then outscored Carlisle (4-15, 3-10) 36-23 in the second half.

Trent Bowles had 13 points and Donnie Pennington 11 for the Carlisle, which had three free-throw attempts in the game, 15 fewer than the Bulldogs. \
