KEYDETS HANDLE WILLIAM AND MARY

Lewis Preston had 25 points to lead VMI past William and Mary 76-68 in college basketball Tuesday night.

VMI led 31-24 at the half as both teams shot poorly but the Keydets started the second half with a 14-5 run to go up 45-29 with 14:55 to go. Preston had six points and Percy Covington added a 3-pointer during the run.

The Keydets (9-14) boosted the lead to 19 at 62-43 with 7:31 remaining before the Tribe (10-14) started a comeback. William and Mary cut it to six points at 70-64 with 1:48 to go and had a chance to cut it to four but missed the shot.

VMI was up 71-66 with 1:03 to go and Johnathon Penn hit two free throws to put it out of reach. VMI's last 11 points came from the free throw line and the team went without a field goal over the last 6:37.

"Obviously Lewis Preston was the difference," coach Joe Cantafio said. "He made the big baskets when we had to have them. I just can't say enough about him.

"Penn got 23 and I don't know how he did it. He missed a number of shots he usually makes. We got the big lead and made enough free throws at the end to hold on."

Penn scored 20 or more points for the ninth straight game.
