EVANS PAINT CALLS IT QUITS; SITE FOR SALE

Evans Paint Inc. of Roanoke, which furloughed more than 30 employees at Christmas, has made its closing official. The company has gone out of business, a spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

The Evans site and its 50,000-square-foot building on Cleveland Avenue Southwest is for sale.

Evans was owned by APL Inc. of Miami. APL has quit the paint manufacturing business, said Dave Finn, chief financial officer for Evans. APL also has companies that make Riveria brand kitchen cabinets, Tempcon automotive air conditioners, and Eagle and Admiral plastic products.

Finn said APL has tried to sell Evans as a paint company and still is trying, "but prospects don't seem very good." He said its two-story building might be suitable for light manufacturing.

Evans Paint once belonged to the same company that owned Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies Inc. and supplied paint to Moore's stores. When that relation was severed, Evans lost the Moore's account.

"We struggled along in a losing position for more than seven years," said Finn. "The economy was the last straw."

Finn and nine employees are packing up records and getting the building ready for prospective buyers. After that's done, Finn said, he probably will be looking for a job.

"I'm like everybody else with Evans Paint," he said.
