KITE, GARLAND D.BLACKSBURG - Garland Daniel Kite, `'Dan", age 82, died Wednesday evening in Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Criglersville, Madison County, Virginia, on November 23, 1909, as the son of Homer and Annie Kite of Culpeper, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Bess Dees Kite; one daughter, Susan McMains of McLean, Virginia; son-in-law, Stephen; granddaughter, Stephanie; grandson, Robert; another daughter, Mary Beth Glenn of Pulaski, Virginia; son-in-law, Nick; granddaughters, Ginger and Meredith. Other survivors include a sister, Thelma Stiffler and a niece, Sandra Burton, both of Culpeper, Virginia. He attended VA Tech and graduated in 1931 with a BS in Agricultural Engineering and received his Masters in 1932 from Iowa State. Mr. Kite joined the staff of Agricultural Engineering Department at VA Tech in 1937 as Extension Agricultural Engineer. In 1954 he was appointed a full professor and Extension Project Leader. He retired from the University in 1969 and was granted the title of Professor Emeritus by the Board of Visitors. In 1970, he was awarded the grade of Fellow in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. In November 1941, he was called to active duty in the U. S. Army and served in the European Theatre until his release in 1945. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1969 when he retired as Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Kite was an active member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the Board of Trustees for 18 years. He was a member of the building committee, where he played a major role in the construction of the Sanctuary and Educational Buildings. He served on the Board of Directors for the United Methodist Home in Roanoke from 1974 to 1977. Mr. Kite has been a member of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg evening Rotary Club since 1938 and served as President in 1941. He was selected to become a Paul Harris Fellow by the members of his club. His community service also included chairmanship and work with the United Way, the Public Service Authority, and the Blacksburg Bi-Centennial Program in 1976. His hobbies included golf, gardening, visiting friends and the sick, miscellaneous activities for the church, the community and the Rotary Club. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church following a 1:00 p.m. service on Saturday. Burial will be in Culpeper, Virginia at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 S. E.
