4TH STREET IN WYTHEVILLE TO BE WIDENED
A section of U.S. 21 in Wytheville on Fourth Street will be widened to accommodate traffic entering and leaving the town along that route. The state Transportation Department has developed plans for the Fourth Street project, between Ridge and Monroe Streets, and hopes to complete the reconstruction by spring of 1995.
Vince Valenti, urban programs engineer for the department, said preliminary engineering would cost $200,000, right-of-way costs would be $894,000 and construction would amount to $1,851,000. The town, which requested the project, will pay 5 percent of the engineering costs and 2 percent in the other two categories.
Property owners on each side of Fourth Street will lose a foot to 1.5 feet to the project. The heavily traveled section is already four-laned but lacks sidewalk, curb and gutters, which will be provided by the project.
