SYKES, JOHN M. John Marshall Sykes, 74 of Roanoke, died Sunday February
23, 1992 of complications of pulmonary emphysema at Community Hospital. He was
born in Philadelphia, Penn., the son of Charles Henry and Charlotte Hannum
Sykes and was preceded in death by his parents and brothers William and
Charles. He graduated from Harvard College and earned a Masters Degree in
Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was
employed by Sun Chemical and Hercules Powder Co. and came to Roanoke in 1949
to work for Southern Varnish Corporation. Later he founded his own company,
Marshall Manufacturing which ultimately merged with Evans Products Inc. at
which time he became a founder and executive of the paint manufacturing
division for thirty years until his retirement. Survivors include, his wife,
Laurel Muntzing Sykes, Roanoke; his son, William Henry Sykes, Alexandria;
daughter, Elizabeth Marshall Sykes, Sacramento, Calif.; stepsons, William
Langley Sibley, Roanoke; David Anthony Sibley, Johnson City, Tenn.; Randolph
Stefan Sibley and Stuart Cameron Sibley, both of Roanoke. Also surviving are
four granddaughters and one grandson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests
that contributions be made to the Intensive Care Unit at Community Hospital. A
memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lotz Roanoke
Chapel, Franklin Road.
