KIDS 'N' GUNS BILL PASSES

The Virginia Senate passed a bill Monday that would send an adult to jail for giving a handgun to a juvenile.

The crime already is a misdemeanor, but carries no jail time and a fine of $250. The bill would increase the penalty to up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $2,500, or both. The measure exempts guns given to relatives or handed out for hunting, target shooting or other sporting events.

Two other gun bills, one making it a felony to carry a loaded gun on school grounds and the other making it a crime to have a gun within 1,000 feet of a school, will come before the Senate today.

All three bills have been approved by the House, and with Senate approval would go to Gov. Douglas Wilder for final action.
