UVA'S WELSH GETS COACHING AWARD

Virginia coach George Welsh on Tuesday received the 1991 Bobby Dodd "Coach of the Year" award given in honor of the most successful coach in Georgia Tech history.

A winning record is necessary to qualify, but the recipient must excel in other areas. The plaque that goes with the award says, "In recognition of a higher and more noble aspect of college coaching . . . a style that emphasizes something more than winning the game . . . a belief that the game of football should be kept in perspective with college life in general."

Welsh, who received the award at a luncheon at the Sheraton Inn, led the Cavaliers to their fifth straight winning season and their third straight bowl invitation last fall. Virginia finished with an overall record of 8-3-1 after a loss to Oklahoma in the Gator Bowl. - Associated Press
