D.C. RESOLUTION URGES REDSKINS TO CHANGE NAME

A District of Columbia councilman drafted a resolution Tuesday urging the Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins to change their name, saying it was offensive.

The term "redskin" is "objectionable to many Native Americans and . . . is racially insensitive in a multicultural society," William Lightfoot said.

The resolution asks Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke "to change to a name that is not offensive to Native Americans or any other minority group."

The resolution tentatively is scheduled to be introduced to the District of Columbia Council at its March 3 Committee of the Whole legislative session.

Lightfoot said although the three-time Super Bowl champions had brought "great pride and joy" to the Washington area for over 50 years, "the continued use of an objectionable name is an offense not only to Native Americans, but is also a discredit to the many men who have played outstanding football for the team."

Cooke in the past has said he doesn't want to change the name.

Others have been criticized by Native Americans for having team names that they call insensitive.
