WARRIORS, MAROONS WIN 1ST-ROUND TOURNEY BATTLES
Chilhowie raced to a big first-quarter lead and held off a late Holston rush to earn a 66-56 victory in the first round of the Hogoheegee District boys' basketball tournament on Tuesday night at Chilhowie.The fourth-seeded Warriors used a 13-1 run to extend their early 7-5 lead to 20-6 after one quarter. The Cavaliers, the fifth seed, trimmed the lead to four points early in the fourth quarter, but could pull no closer.
Patrick Brooks led Chilhowie with 21 points and Jason Fore added 16 points with 16 rebounds. Sidney Barr finished with 14 points, eight in the final quarter, and Eric Sheets chipped in 11.
James Hurley scored 21 and Jason Rush 13 for Holston.
In Wytheville, third-seeded George Wythe blasted sixth-seeded Castlewood 92-50.
Sie Dickinson scored 15 points, Chris Waddell 12, Jesse Stewart 11, Mike Cook 11 and Tracy Brown 10 for the Maroons, who will play the Northwood vs. PH-Glade Spring winner in the semifinals Thursday night.
O.J. Williams scored 22 points for Castlewood.
Chilhowie will meet Lebanon, which beat Rural Retreat 69-51 in Lebanon.
The Pioneers, the Hogoheegee's regular-season champs, rushed to a 26-6 first-quarter lead and never were threatened.
Ben Campbell scored 12 points and Jim Gillespie 11 for Lebanon (17-4).
Thomas Taylor had 13 points for eighth-seeded Rural Retreat, which finished 1-20. \
Mt. Empire
CHRISTIANSBURG - The top-seeded Buffaloes hammered the Rockets in the opening game of the tournament.
Fred Via led the stampede with 20 points and Travis Crawford added 19 for Floyd County (19-2). The Buffaloes led 54-18 at halftime.
Bland (4-17) got a game-high 21 points from Toby Dotson and 10 from Jes Selfe. \
Monday's games
\ Piedmont District: In Bassett, Chatham had won only one game all year, but the Cavaliers got the tournament started with a bang by shocking Gretna 66-62 to move into quarter-final round game tonight against Martinsville.
The victory broke a 19-game losing streak for Chatham, which hadn't won since the opening night of the season against Patrick County. The Cougars were eliminated in the other first-round game 60-53 by Dan River.
Chatham (2-19) had balanced scoring led by LaVelton Pope and Chris Turner with 11 points each. Gretna (7-15) was paced by Lamont Hubbard with a game-high 13 points.
In the opener, Vince Yancy hit both of his 3-point shots in the final quarter to help Dan River (6-16) past Patrick County. Brian Gunn paced the winners with a game-high 18 points. Mike Wood and Brandon Roberson each had 10 for Patrick County (4-17). \
