ALTAVISTA DUMPS LIBERTY 71-60

Mark Johnson scored 25 points and Sherman Pannell added 22 as Altavista downed Liberty 71-60 in the first round of the Seminole District boys' basketball tournament Tuesday night at Rustburg High School.

In the other first-round game Brookville knocked off Buckingham County 52-51.

Mike Kinlaw added 12 for the Colonels, who used an 18-11 fourth-quarter run to pull away and eliminate the Minutemen.

Scott Martin finished with 16 points, Chris Dean 13, Jerry Padgett 12 and Patrick Patterson 11 for Liberty.

Altavista advances to Thursday's semifinal against the winner of tonight's Staunton River-Nelson County duel.

The second semifinal game will be Friday and the championship Saturday. All games are at Rustburg High. \

Mt. Empire

CHRISTIANSBURG - The top-seeded Buffaloes hammered the Rockets in the opening game of the tournament.

Fred Via led the stampede with 20 points and Travis Crawford added 19 for Floyd County (19-2).

Bland (4-17) got a game-high 21 points from Toby Dotson and 10 from Jes Selfe.

Mitch Hawks scored 21 points as Grayson County rolled into the quarterfinals with a 58-47 victory over Rocky Gap.

Devin Floyd had 12 points, Bonner Satterwhite 11 and Wilbert Campbell 10 for Grayson (17-5). Larry Edwards had 13 points and Kyle Gibson 11 for seventh-seeded Rocky Gap (8-12). \

Piedmont

BASSETT - Odell Hodge had 37 points, 26 rebounds and 8 blocks to lead the top-seeded Lancers to an easy victory.

Lonzy Robertson chipped in 21 points for Laurel Park (20-2), the top-ranked team in the state. Dan River (6-17) got 16 points from Sonny Motley and 10 from Brian Gunn.

Bassett held off Tunstall in the game's final 1:30 to win 71-70.

With seven second to go in the game, the Trojans missed a a chance to win the game. They had possession of the ball on the right side of their basket.

The ball was inbounded and, Bassett knocked it away. The ball rolled to midcourt, and time expired without Tunstall being able to get off a shot.
