BOARD DEADLOCKS ON DOCK VARIANCE
The Franklin County Board of Zoning Appeals deadlocked Tuesday on a variance sought by Wayne Compton for a dock on his property at Smith Mountain Lake.Compton, commissioner of revenue for Roanoke County, was told that the board would consider his request again next month.
Compton expanded the dock without a building permit and in violation of an ordinance that prohibits structures from taking up more than one-third of a cove.
Compton said he and a neighboring landowner wanted to share a dock, but they need a variance because their property is in the back of a narrow cove.
A motion to grant the request deadlocked 3-3, in part because of concerns the dock would affect the lake access of two other adjacent lots. Board member Valerie Burnette was absent.
