REPORTED EARNINGS
May Department StoresMay Department Stores Co., St. Louis-based parent of the Hecht's chain, reported net earnings of $515 million, or $3.87 per share, for its fiscal year ended Feb. 1, up 3 percent from $500 million, or $3.74, a year earlier. Net retail sales were $10.4 billion, up 5.5 percent from $9.86 billion.
Fourth-quarter earnings were $266 million, or $2.01 a share, up 5 percent from the year-earlier quarter, on sales of $3.28 billion, up 3.3 percent. \
Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Charlotte, N.C., parent of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Roanoke, reported net income of $2.9 million for the year ending Dec. 29. Net income available to holders of common stock was $2.2 million, or 24 cents per share, up 22 percent from $1.8 million, or 19 cents per share, a year earlier. Operating cash flow was $56.6 million, down 4.5 percent from $59.3 million.
\ Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., retailer with Wal-Mart and Sam's Wholesale Club stores in Roanoke, on Wednesday reported sales of $43.9 billion for its fiscal year ended Jan. 31, up 35 percent from $32.6 billion a year earlier. Net income increased 25 percent to $1.6 billion, or $1.40 a share, from $1.3 billion, or $1.14 a share.
Fourth-quarter sales rose 32 percent to $13.6 billion from $10.4 billion. Net income rose 25 percent to $602.4 million from $481.8 million.
\ Hoechst Celanese Corp.
Hoechst Celanese Corp., Somerville, N.J., operator of a cigarette filter fibers plant at Narrows, reported 1991 net earnings of $172 million on net sales of $6.8 billion. Earnings fell 14 percent from $201 million on sales up 4.6 percent from $6.5 billion.
\ Anac Holding Corp.
Anac Holding Corp., Twinsburg, Ohio operator of Revco drug stores, on Wednesday reported net income of $16.2 million for its third quarter ended Feb. 8, up 28 percent from $12.7 million a year earlier. Sales rose 11.9 percent to $522.9 million from $467.4 million.
