INDIANS MOVE BALL INSIDE FOR VICTORY

For three quarters, Radford High kept it close.

But, by the second quarter Wednesday night, Blacksburg showed why it won the New River District.

In the first three minutes of the fourth, the Indians rolled off nine straight points. They held Radford to three shots - all misses - and they frustrated the Bobcats into calling two timeouts.

After that, the Indians kept the pressure on and coasted to a 58-32 victory over Radford in the semifinals of the New River District boys' basketball tournament at Blacksburg High.

The win put the Indians (16-5) one game away from the tournament title. They will meet Carroll County in Saturday's final. The loss ended the season for the Bobcats (3-19).

Blacksburg got there by remembering the district's leading scorer - Jon Maher - could be found in the low post. After being held to five points in the first three quarters, Maher opened the Indians' scoring in the fourth with a three-point play. He added a pair of free throws and two layups later in the quarter as Blacksburg pulled further ahead.

"We weren't up by that much; we hadn't been playing with that much intensity," said Maher, who left late in the fourth quarter with a mild ankle sprain and 14 points.

"Their athleticism took over," Radford coach Brenda King said. "They could make something out of a busted play."
