TOP SEED COVINGTON ROMPS

Forward Ramon Sampson scored 23 points and top-seeded Covington defeated eighth-seeded Rockbridge 77-61 Wednesday night in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament at Covington.

It was the final game in Rockbridge High history. Rockbridge, Lexington and Natural Bridge will combine to form a consolidated Rockbridge County high school next year.

It was Covington's 17th consecutive victory. Sampson, a 6-foot-1 junior, also had eight rebounds and six steals for Covington (18-3). Keeno Jones added 13 points, Tony Jeter had 12 and Van Wallace added 10.

On Friday night at Natural Bridge, Covington plays Glenvar, which beat Lexington.

Point guard Michael Chambers led all scorers with 26 points, including eight 3-point field goals, for Rockbridge.

Also in the Pioneer:

\ Glenvar 65, Lexington 52: At Glenvar, the Highlanders shot 67 percent in the second half and outscored the Scarlet Hurricane 20-11 in the third quarter.

The Highlanders (13-8) led 27-21 at the half, but they made 15 of 21 field-goal attempts in the final two quarters and switched to a zone press on defense to keep Lexington away from the basket.

\ Parry McCluer 75, Bath County 67: At Hot Springs, the sixth-seeded Fighting Blues got 20 points from Jason Baker and 18 from Chuck Baker in defeating the host Chargers, seeded third.

Leslie Gray and Shawn Zdniak added 12 points each for Parry McCluer (11-10), which will face James River in Friday's semifinals.

Todd Jenkins had a game-high of 25 points for Bath County (13-8). Craig Phillips added 13 points and Matt Sherrard had 10.

Parry McCluer made 18 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter.

\ James River 76, Natural Bridge 50: At Buchanan, the Knights shot 83 percent (19-of-23) in the second half and rolled past the Rockets.

James River (15-6) outscored Natural Bridge 14-3 in the second quarter with the help of its man-to-man defense, which gave up precious few shots to the Rockets. In the second half, the Knights rarely missed and outscored Natural Bridge 44-31.

They were 33-of-54 for the game. \

Mountain Empire

\ Narrows 70, Fort Chiswell 67: In Christiansburg, the Green Wave, seeded sixth in the tournament, knocked off the third-seeded Pioneers.

McCreary Mann led Narrows (10-9) with 18 points, Tinker Wells added 15 and Kelly Lowe had 13.

Fort Chiswell (14-5) was led by Brian Lampkins' 20 points. \

Wednesday's games

\ Bassett 71, Tunstall 70: At Bassett, the Bengals held off the Bengals in the game's final 1:30 to win in the first round of the Piedmont District tournament.

\ Grayson County 58, Rocky Gap 47: At Christiansburg, Mitch Hawks scored 21 points as the Blue Devils rolled into the quarterfinals of the Mountain Empire District tournament at Christiansburg High School. \
