Sandlot teams given sportsmanship awards

The Northwest Raiders 1-A of the Junior League and the North Roanoke Recreation Chargers of the Little League were presented John A. Kelley Memorial Sportsmanship plaques at a recent meeting of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce's Youth Sports Committee.

The Raiders won the honor in Division I while the Chargers were the winner in Division II.

The Raiders were coached by Kevin Baker, and the cheerleaders were coached by Katrina Jones. The Chargers were coached by Wayne Myers and the cheerleaders by Sara Kennedy.

The officials who worked the Sandlot Super Bowl games did the voting. Judging was based on the conduct of the coaches, players, cheering squads and fans.

The plaques honor the late John Kelley, who was a chamber official and active in youth activities for many years.

The proceeds from the Super Bowl were distributed by committee chairman Jim Carroll to the recreation departments that took part in the event, based on the number of teams each had competing.

Roanoke had 24 teams and received $2,494 for football equipment.

Roanoke County had 18 teams and received $1,871; Salem had 12 teams and received $1,247; Botetourt County four and received $436; Bedford had two teams and received $187.

The Super Bowl realized a net profit of $6,237 from the sale of tickets to chamber members, competing teams and from the gate. - BOB McLELLAND
