NORTH CROSS ADVANCES
North Cross, down by 11 points in the third quarter, turned on the full-court pressure then held off Eastern Mennonite 57-54 in the first round of the Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball tournament Thursday.North Cross (13-12) trailed 54-53 with 22 seconds left when Marcus Cardwell fed Mike Bryan for a layup and the lead. Eastern Mennonite (15-12) missed a shot and fouled Cardwell with 14 seconds left. He made both free throws and Eastern Mennonite never got off a last 3-point attempt.
Bryan finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Cardwell added 13 points and six assists. Junior Strong led the losers with 13 points.

Kevin Brady led the way with 26 points and Vernon Patterson had 21 for Holy Cross (10-13). Jason Delong, who was named to the all-conference team with Brady and Patterson, scored 24 to lead Roanoke Valley Christian (10-13). \
