SENATE HOOKS ITSELF A FISHING LICENSE BILL
A bill requiring anglers in the Chesapeake Bay to pay for saltwater fishing licenses cleared the state Senate 27-13 Thursday and awaits only the governor's signature to become law.The Senate made its bill identical to one the House of Delegates narrowly approved several days ago, fearing that submitting any changes for House consent would endanger the bill.
That means the $7.50 saltwater fishing fee will apply only to fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and tidal tributaries; fishing in the ocean will remain free. Delegates this week had rejected a Senate version of the bill, which would have made the fee apply to all saltwater fishermen.
Anyone younger than 16 or older than 65 will not have to get a license, and boat owners can buy a blanket permit to cover anyone they take fishing.
Money from the fees will go into a fund to preserve and rehabilitate the resources of the bay.
Two companion bills also won Senate approval: One requires commercial fishermen to pay $250 and register to sell their catch; the other allows the state to limit who can harvest different types of fish.
