DEDMON NOT QUITTING ON FIGHT FOR BONDS
Radford University President Donald Dedmon was in Richmond on "doomsday" when the legislature cast aside a bond bill that would provide money for capital projects at the state's colleges and universities."A group of us met with the governor and said that it was imperative a bond issue go forward," Dedmon told the Board of Visitors.
Radford has requested $5 million to help start a new college of global studies, touted as a project that will push the university into the 21st century.
"We must get it going," Dedmon said. "Higher education cannot afford to do the same things it's been doing. It's a different world."
He said a similar project for a college of science and technology at James Madison University also is necessary to help handle the 70,000 more high school graduates who are expected to be looking for schools in Virginia by the year 2000.
Another $14 million in projects was included in the last bond issues for renovations and additions to the library, the science complex and Preston and McGuffey Halls. The governor presented a new, $600 million bill to the General Assembly on Thursday.
"I'm going to fight to the end of the session," Dedmon said.
In other business, the board elected Tommy Jones of Floyd to serve as rector next year. Pulaski's B.C. Wampler will serve as vice rector and Doris Bratton of Radford University will serve as secretary to the board.
