AVERAGE VA. SALARIES DECLINE FOR TEACHERS

The average salary for Virginia teachers declined this school year, according to a National Education Association survey. Only South Carolina and Virginia showed decreases, the group said.

The average salary in Virginia is $31,921, or $318 less than the 1990-91 average, the Virginia Department of Education estimates.

According to the national survey, the average American teacher earned $34,413this year, up 4.4 percent from 1990-91. Among the 50 states, Virginia ranks 25thin average teachers' salaries.
