CFL TEAM MAKES EX-HOKIE NO. 2 PICK

Draft day Canada-style brought no surprises for former Virginia Tech linebacker Mark Scott, who was the second overall pick Saturday in the Canadian Football League's annual selection of native players.

Saskatchewan, which had flown Scott into a Hamilton, Ontario, hotel and told him beforehand it would select him No. 2, made good on its promise.

"I'm just glad it's over with," Scott said. "It was an experience.

"They think I've got a good shot to come in [and play right away]. But I'm not going in there with any delusions of grandeur. I'm going to go in there and fight for a job."

Scott was a reserve in 1990 and played only two games for Tech in 1991, his senior season, before he was suspended from the team for using a substance prohibited by the NCAA. He said the substance was a "muscle healant" that he got from a New York doctor.

The fact that he lived in Canada for eight years before moving to New York made him eligible for Saturday's draft and boosted his stock with CFL teams.

His agent, New York lawyer Alan Hodish, said he'll try for a two-year contract with a third option year at a salary in the mid- to high-$30,000 range plus a moderate signing bonus.

Last year's No. 1 pick, Hodish said, got $4,500 to sign.

Scott said he hopes to parlay his CFL career into a stint in the NFL. He reports to Saskatchewan's training camp June 10.
