VA. COURT UPHOLDS HUNTING-DEATH VERDICT

The Virginia Supreme Court upheld the involuntary manslaughter conviction of a hunter who killed a companion after mistaking him for a squirrel.

The 4-3 majority ruled Friday that Alfred Morris Cable was reckless when he fired at a what he called a "flash of movement" as the two men hunted turkeys in the George Washington National Forest in November 1989.

Cable, 47, was convicted in Circuit Court of involuntary manslaughter in the death of David Virgil Clowers, 37, and ordered to serve four months behind bars.
