In 1951, Williamson retired as chairman of the City Board of Assessors and became housing inspector. He was named to the position by a citizens advisory board after the city enacted a housing and hygiene ordinance.
He was in charge of inspecting homes for unsanitary conditions and notifying homeowners of violations.
Williamson resigned from the job in 1952 to become a loan officer and appraiser for First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Roanoke.
He is survived by a son, John T. Williamson Jr. of Arlington; a daughter, Ann Hall of Bedford; a sister, Dorothy Helvestine of Roanoke; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Burial Park.
