TECH SET TO HIRE 2 ASSISTANTS

Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer is ready to welcome two of his former Hokies teammates as assistant coaches, The Roanoke Times & World-News has learned.

George Foussekis and Terry Strock had been Beamer's targets since Tech's sixth-year head coach dismissed two aides in February. Foussekis and Strock were in Blacksburg on Sunday, and pending the resolution of last-minute details, an official announcement is expected either today or Tuesday.

Neither Strock nor Beamer returned phone messages Sunday. Foussekis said Sunday he could not comment on the situation.

Foussekis and Strock, both former Tech assistants, would replace Duke Strager and Larry Creekmore, who were fired Feb. 11. A Tech source said Foussekis will coach defensive tackles and Strock will coach defensive ends for the Hokies.

Foussekis was a Tech assistant from 1969-71 and is a member of the Tech sports Hall of Fame. He was a Maryland assistant from 1972 until last season, when Terrapins head coach Joe Krivak and his staff were fired. Foussekis had been Krivak's assistant head coach for the past six years.

Strock was a Tech coach from 1966-70, assisted former Hokies head coach Jerry Claiborne at Maryland from 1972-81, followed Claiborne to Kentucky, then joined Bobby Ross' staff at Georgia Tech in 1990.
