SULLIVAN AWARD FINALIST HAS ANOTHER GOAL

Mike Barrowman is back as a finalist for the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete for 1991. This time, he has another goal in mind.

Barrowman, world record holder in the 200-meter breast stroke, will compete in the U.S. Olympic swimming trials this week at Indiana University.

"I have to put them into two separate entities," Barrowman said. "The Olympic trials are the thing that I have to concentrate on the most because they're the thing that I can do something about."

The award, which an athlete can receive only once, will be presented tonight.

Track and field performers have been the most successful in voting for the award with 35 winners, followed by aquatics with 12. Long jumper Mike Powell and Barrowman are considered the favorites this year.

Another finalist likely to receive support from the voters is Duke's Christian Laettner. However, the last participant in a team sport to receive the award was UCLA basketball star Bill Walton for 1973.

Other finalists are Eric Griffin (boxing), Donna Weinbrecht (skiing), Kent Ferguson (diving), Michael Johnson (track), Sara Josephson (synchronized swimming), Kristi Yamaguchi (figure skating) and Kim Zmeskal (gymnastics). - Associated Press
