FRESHMEN SPARK TECH BASEBALL WIN

Freshmen Dee Dalton and Denny Hedspeth contributed key hits in the eighth and ninth innings Sunday as Virginia Tech pulled away for a 12-6 non-conference baseball victory over UNC Greensboro.

The Hokies (3-0) broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the eighth. Dalton, from Roanoke's Cave Spring High School, ignited the rally with a leadoff double and Hedspeth followed with a double to score Dalton.

Tech put away the game with four ninth-inning runs on five hits. Hedspeth had a run-scoring single and Dalton also scored that inning.

Dalton finished 2-for-4 with three runs and a two-run single in the fourth inning. Hedspeth, a catcher, was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Les Jennette, the Hokies' senior designated hitter, continued his hot start with four singles in four at-bats and a sacrifice fly.

Jennette is 8-for-9 with six RBI in the Hokies' three games, including a pinch-hit grand slam in their opener Friday and three hits and an RBI Saturday.

Jonathon Frohm (1-0) came in to pitch the seventh inning and picked up the victory for Tech. UNCG is 4-4.
