RELIGION BRIEFS

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, an annual observance of Church Women United, is scheduled Friday. The Roanoke Valley unit of the ecumenical women's group will have its celebration at St. John's Episcopal Church, Elm Avenue at South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Stewardship of the Earth will be the theme with Ellen Aiken of the Clean Valley Council speaking on "Recycling."

\ NOONDAY LENTEN DEVOTIONS for the Old Southwest community will begin Wednesday and continue through April 8, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1108 Franklin Road S.W. The Rev. Charles W. Easley, pastor, will lead the services that start at at 12:15. Lunch will be available from 11:45 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. and again from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Easley's sermons will deal with little-known facts about events of Holy Week.

\ THE HIGH STREET BAPTIST CHOIR will sing Sunday night at 7 at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial S.W. A reception will follow.

\ ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W., will have five Wednesday night potluck suppers and study programs to enhance spiritual growth during Lent. The programs, which start March 11 and continue through April 8, have a theme of "Jesus Christ Is . . ." The Revs. Floyd Addison, Jean Bozeman, Richard Harris, William Kinzer and Harold Uhl will speak. The meal starts at 6, and the service at 7.

\ OUR LADY OF NAZARETH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2505 Electric Road S.W., is sponsoring a "Seeking God" adult spiritual growth series starting April 3 and covering two weekends. The intensive 30-hour program requires registration by March 16; call 774-0773.

\ A BENEFIT CONCERT to raise funds to combat homelessness is scheduled March 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road S.W. There is no charge for the program, but an offering will be taken for the Transitional Living Center operated by TAP.

\ HOLY WOMEN AND HOLY THOUGHT, a free lecture on some female mystics of the High Middle Ages, is scheduled March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Lucas Hall 206 of Roanoke College. It will be led by John G. Tuthill of Georgia Southern University, who will tell of Irish mystics, and Pamela S. Anderson of the Roanoke College faculty who will discuss the power of medieval women in a male world. Both speakers hold doctorates in subjects related to their talks.
