CHRISTIANSBURG CHAMBER GIVES LONGTIME MAYOR ITS TOP AWARD

The Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce celebrated the town's 200th birthday at an annual dinner Friday and gave Mayor Harold Linkous the 1992 Distinguished Citizen of the Year award.

Linkous has served 22 years on Town Council, the last six as mayor.

He graduated from Christiansburg High School, was in the U.S. Navy and has been a civil servant for 40 years. He is active in many church and civic groups, including the Christiansburg Jaycees and Band Boosters, Boy Scouts, the Lions Club and the Wesley Foundation.

Other community members and businesses also were honored at the banquet, held at the Farmhouse restaurant:

Premier Bank of Shawsville received the Business/Industry Education Award. Luke Lively, vice president of the bank, went to classrooms at Shawsville High School once a week to teach students how to charter, run and liquidate a business.

Premier Bank, formerly Bank of Shawsville, has for many years supported the high school's athletics and academic programs, including providing funding for a track and field and artwork for the library. The bank also has hired business students for part-time work.

Lowell E. Wade, president and owner of Wades Foods Inc., received the 1992 Commerce Award.

The family business, now in its third generation, began in the 1920s and now has 20 related businesses throughout the New River Valley with a work force totaling 500 employees.

The company makes contributions to United Way, area rescue squads and fire departments as well as to needy individuals.

Ernie Bently of the Copy Center received the 1992 Outstanding Service Award for his unending volunteer work for the chamber and donation of time and materials for chamber functions.

Shelby Roope, advertising director at the News Messenger, will take over as president of the chamber for 1992.

Larry Ward, advertising manager of the New River Valley Bureau of the Roanoke Times & World-News, had been president for 1991.
