RACE-BOUND PLANE FALLS, KILLING 2

Two people headed to Richmond for Sunday's NASCAR race died when their small plane crashed on landing at Richmond International Airport, police said.

Scott Varner, 25, of Eden, N.C., and Patricia Hoskins, 26, also of Eden, were killed when a six-seat Piper Aztec clipped a stand of trees and went down at dusk Friday, said Trooper Robert Johnson. The two were the only people aboard.

The plane apparently missed its first landing attempt and crashed as it came around for a second try, Johnson said. The plane is owned by Jasper Engine Co., of Jasper Ind., he said.

Jasper is the engine builder for NASCAR driver Ted Musgrave, who is in Richmond for today's Pontiac 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Musgrave failed to qualify in time trials Friday.
