PROFESSOR TO TEACH FREE TO KEEP LATIN ALIVE

Latin will live at Old Dominion University, thanks to a retiring professor's offer to come back and teach the course for free.

Old Dominion is the only college in the region that offers Latin. And since 1984, Leland D. Peterson has taught all the Latin courses there. ODU had planned to drop its classical studies program when Peterson, 65, retired this summer.

"I really think it's outstanding that Leland is willing to give of his time in that way," said Paul J. Champagne, chairman of ODU's Faculty Senate. "That's sort of what teaching is all about."

Next year, Peterson will continue teaching Latin 201 and 202, giving ODU about $4,000 worth of work gratis. Part-time teachers with the rank of professor usually earn $2,000 a course. - Associated Press
