Donald Anderson made four free throws in the final 5.8 seconds as the fourth-seeded Monarchs (14-14) upset the two-time defending CAA champions and extended their longest winning streak of the season to four games.
"Someone had to step up," first-year Old Dominion coach Oliver Purnell said, "and several guys did. I could go on about them all night."
The Spiders (22-7) had won eight games in a row and beaten Old Dominion in both regular-season meetings.
This time, Richmond had to work its way back from a 14-point first-half deficit to take its first lead at 33-32 on a follow shot by Jim Springer with 14:25 left.
There were four ties and six lead changes - with no team leading by more than three points - before Leonard, who averages 21.7 points, put the Monarchs ahead to stay at 52-51 on a baseline jumper at the 4:20 mark.
The Monarchs were up 58-55 when Richmond's Curtis Blair, the CAA player of the year, sank what he thought was a 3-pointer from the left wing with nine seconds left. However, referee John Bonder ruled it a two-pointer, making it 58-57. Blair, from Roanoke, finished with 13 points.
Anderson and Keith Jackson each had 12 points for ODU.
