CONSTRUCTION FORCES I-81 TO GO SLOWER

The speed limit on four miles of Interstate 81 in Roanoke and Botetourt counties has been dropped from 65 mph to 55 because of construction of a new truck weighing station.

The new limit is for both north- and southbound traffic between milepost 146 in the Hollins area and milepost 150 in the Troutville area.

The limit will be in effect for several months, the state Transportation Department said.

The $8.8-million project will replace the old station with a new weigh-in-motion facility, which can weigh trucks at 25 mph.

The department said the new station, scheduled for completion in October 1993, will cause less disruption to traffic and will make the highway safer.
