All three Roanoke Valley District teams still alive in state competition will be at Botetourt as well as Covington, the Pioneer District champion.
Patrick Henry's boys, ranked No. 1 in the state, meet Chantilly at 8:45 p.m. in a Group AAA boys' state tournament game after Covington battles Twin Springs at 7 p.m. in the Group A tournament.
The most intriguing matchup Saturday has Cave Spring facing nationally ranked James Madison in a Group AAA girls' game at 1 p.m. The Knights, by winning the Northwestern Region title with a 60-39 victory over Pulaski County, figured they wouldn't have to play Madison in the first round. However, West Springfield upset Madison 58-52 in the Northern Region final to set up the Knights' matchup with the Warhawks.
Pulaski County plays West Springfield at 2:45 p.m., but the Cougars won't have it any easier than Cave Spring. The Spartans lost only one game, to an out-of-state team.
The Blacksburg-Northside Group AA rematch is one of two state tournament games scheduled for Friday. The Indians and Vikings, who split two games in the regular season, will play at 7:30 p.m. at Christiansburg.
The other Friday game matches Lebanon against Haysi at Emory & Henry in a Group A tournament game.
Laurel Park, ranked No. 1 in Group AA, hopes to regroup Saturday when it plays Virginia High at Emory & Henry. The Lancers lost in the Piedmont District and Region III championship games.
Two of the four defending state champions are still alive. Lebanon won the Group A boys' crown a year ago and Madison went unbeaten in taking the Group AAA girls' title.
