District Chief James Patton said the body of Michael Anthony Brown, 30, was found Thursday morning in a downstairs bedroom of a Golfside Avenue house.
Someone standing outside the house told firefighters that Brown was upstairs.
"We wasted valuable time looking in the upstairs," Patton said.
When firefighters finally found Brown, five minutes after they arrived, he was dead.
Firefighters were called to the one-story frame house in Northwest Roanoke about 2:40 a.m. Fire and heavy smoke was rolling out a basement window, Patton said.
It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which did an estimated $20,000 damage to the house. Five other people escaped uninjured.
Assistant city Fire Marshal J.W. Percell is looking into the possibility that faulty wiring may have caused the blaze, which charred a portion of the basement and resulted in smoke damage throughout the house.
