CAVE SPRING GIRLS HAVE A TOUGH 1ST-ROUND OPPONENT

It was quite a surprise when Cave Spring's girls found out they were playing James Madison in the first round of the Group AAA basketball tournament this afternoon at 1 at Lord Botetourt.

The Knights had won the Northwestern Region and expected Madison to do the same thing in the Northern Region. That would have put the two teams in the opposite bracket.

West Springfield upset those plans by beating James Madison, ending the Warhawks' 56-game winning streak. It also gave the Knights a tougher first-round game, at least according to the teams records.

"Our goal was not just to be at the state, but to win it," said Cave Spring coach Dave Layman, whose team was beaten by Madison 79-61 in last year's semifinals. "You want to win it when you've been there four straight years. Maybe [by beating Madison] this is a good chance to make it to the finals."

The Madison-Cave Spring game tips off a busy day for Timesland teams. In the second game of this afternoon's double-header, Pulaski County meets West Springfield at 2:45.

There are two more games tonight at Lord Botetourt. Covington takes on Twin Springs in a Group A boys' game at 7 followed by Patrick Henry against Chantilly in a Group AAA boys' contest at 8:45.

Only Laurel Park won't be at Lord Botetourt. The Lancers travel to Emory & Henry College for a 7 p.m. game against Virginia High in a Group AA boys' game.

All of the winners advance to the final four scheduled at University Hall in Charlottesville next week.
